We lost one of the greats this week. On Monday, January 15th, Dolores O’Riordan, lead singer of Irish rock band, the Cranberries, passed away in London, where she had been recording. She was 46. The sad news was announced by her publicist. The cause of death has not been announced but authorities are not treating it as suspicious and are awaiting the test results of a coroner’s examination. In 1849 German composer, Richard Wagner, referred to the opera as ‘Gesamtkunstwerk’ or “the total work of art” as it was a platform that brought together many different art forms. Today this idea is best applied to music videos— those glossy, short format films that launch catchy singles and of-the-moment culture into the eyes and ears of millions. From Friday, July 22nd to Saturday, July 24th the inaugural edition of Panorama Music Festival was held on Randall’s Island in New York City. Legendary musician, Prince, died today at age 57 in his Chanhassen, Minnesota home. In a statement earlier today his publicist, Yvette Noel-Schure, announced: “It is with profound sadness that I am confirming that the legendary, iconic performer, Prince Rogers Nelson, has died at his Paisley Park residence this morning at the age of 57.” The exact cause of death is not known although it was speculated that the singer had been sick recently after he cancelled a concert in early April.
