Subtle statements and quiet tones are not the thing this season. With everything going on politically, there’s never been a better time to state your opinion – on the streets and on your sleeve. This spring, designers have taken cues from the global state of affairs and churned out spring collections that feature amped up graphics, oversized slogans, logos and punchy prints. In the words of feminist icon, Madonna, “Express yourself!”

What is the true purpose of a fashion show?  Is it to portray a message to the exclusive audience in the room or should designers tailor their shows for the positive consumption of the web-surfing public in an effort to actually sell clothing?  In our age of  endless “likes” and “dislikes” these queries may prove to be useless.  In the vein of “all publicity is good publicity” it would seem that the biggest shock gets the most social media hits which then translates to the largest profit margin,

May 1st marked one of fashion’s biggest night of the year, the annual Met Gala. Corresponding with the exhibition, Rei Kawakubo/Comme des Garçons: Art of the In-Between, the 2017 edition of the ball honored 74-year-old designer Rei Kawakubo with a Comme des Garçons-themed night. The star-studded event marked the first time in decades that a living designer has been the main focus of the night. The last time there was a such an occurrence was 1983’s Yves Saint Laurent-themed ball.

From February 27th through March 7th, fashion’s elite flocked to the city of lights to see the biggest names roll out their FW’17 collections at Paris Fashion Week. At recent fashion weeks in New York, London and Milan, designers put politics on the runway but in France, the main focus was on fashion, fashion, and more fashion. Every fashion destination has its defining characteristics – look to New York for the hippest street style, London for camp and quirk, and Paris for edgy sophistication. Milan is king among the clothes capitols so for their most recent fashion week, everyone was wondering, will the city of luxury keep in step with its usual high class opulence or will designers showcase politics instead of purses? From February 22nd through the 27th at fashion week, storied labels managed a mix of both.

Marc Jacobs is known for a spectacle so his stripped-down runway show on at New York Fashion Week on February 16th came as a surprise to many. The famed designer presented forty-three looks to the tune of…silence. No music was heard, no set was seen, no iPhones were permitted (until the finale when models took to the streets and turned the cameras onto the audience), and there were definitely no technicolor hair extensions. From February 17th through the 21st, brands like Burberry and Christopher Kane showed their latest collections at London Fashion Week. As usual, the designers across the pond managed to showcase quirky looks in salable ways. As for political statements, they were far less abundant than at New York Fashion Week but when a designer had something to say, it was quite clear. This spring it’s time to wear the trousers! Social awareness groups like Pantsuit Nation have made menswear a style of resistance so put on your favorite pleated trouser. Taking a stand in slouchy slacks is much more comfortable than marching in mini-skirts.

Is it sacrilegious to say that haute couture is getting….modern? From January 22 – 26 famed fashion houses presented their Spring 2017 high fashion collections. Perhaps its due to the state of world affairs or the waning interest in ball gowns. Either way, designers got their heads out of confectionary clouds and brought things a little closer to earth with modern silhouettes, minimal embellishment, and bold pops of color.
